A trip to bottom-of-the-league Alloa Athletic was just what Mark Kerr’s side needed after another cataclysmic defensive episode; those first 12+ minutes of United’s League Cup tie at Livingston last weekend. The Wasps have picked up just one point this season, have found goals hard to come by and, on Saturday, Ayr eased to victory at a venue and against an opponent who have not caused too much trouble since that “f*cking left-back” looked to have ended our title hopes in 2017/18.

Here are three things we learned at the Indodrill Stadium:

  1. Luke McCowan in quietly becoming a key player…

Despite progressing to the last 16 of the Betfred Cup a week ago, Ayr United’s performance against League 2 Stranraer was demoralising. Only edging past the spirited Stair Parkers was not good enough and hinted at serious problems within Mark Kerr’s new-look squad.

Saturday called for a reaction against Dundee: and Kerr got exactly that. The Dees still carry lustre and have obvious aspirations of a return to top flight football, making them an opponent to be wary of. …

The Honest Men returned the Somerset Park on Saturday after being involved in a car crash the previous week in Greenock. If we continue this tenuous analogy, a top-of-the range sports car was expected to pull into the driveway in the shape of top-of-the-table Dunfermline Athletic but, as it transpired, the Pars were more akin to a luxury Volvo. A quality vehicle but just a little safe and a stalemate ensued. Still with me? Here are three things we learned:

  1. This was a big clean sheet for Ayr’s young back four

Mark Kerr bristled at Calum Campbell’s question; at the…

The clocks went back an hour last weekend but last night it would have felt like they stopped altogether for the management team and players of Ayr United after this result. A spectacular collapse saw the Honest Men fall to their first defeat of the Championship campaign, throwing away a two-goal lead at Cappielow in inexplicable fashion when just eight minutes away from victory. …

The Honest Men’s 17 year wait for a win at the Caledonian Stadium continues after Nikolay Todorov netted a late equaliser for a seriously understrength Inverness. On balance, it was probably a fair result; the home side had a number of good chances on the break and earlier in the match Todorov was unlucky with a header early that may well have crossed the goal line. That said, a late Cammy Smith free-kick arguably drew the best save of the match.

Here are five talking points from the Championship clash between these two play-off hopefuls:

  1. Andy Murdoch shone on his…

Ayr United kicked of the 2020/21 Championship with three points against Queen of the South at Somerset Park on Saturday… but there is certainly room for improvement in the performance of the Honest Men. With more that a small nod to the much loved but departed Tell Him He’s Pelé, here are five things we learned from the season opener:

  1. Michael Miller can be a key man for United this season

When Michael Miller joined United at the start of August the move was overshadowed by the signing of Tom Walsh on the same day. Many (perhaps with an unrealistic…

Ian McCall was Scottish football’s forgotten man five years ago. The radio appearances, colour pieces in the ‘Sundays’ and co-commentary gigs were increasingly few and far between; the job offers non-existent. He did not want to leave Partick Thistle three years and eight months previously; he had to. Renewed and ready to return to the fold, he found the game was moving on without him.

Things were equally bleak at Somerset Park. A part-time club in Scotland’s third tier, ten years had passed since the Honest Men had a foothold in what is now the Championship [two separate seasons in…
